"Art is the highest form of hope." - Gerhard Richter
Roy Lichtenstein - Crak! (Corlett II.2)
When you think of Pop Art, this image comes to mind. "Crak!" is, alongside "Whaam!", one of the absolute icons in Roy Lichtenstein's work. Created during the golden age of Pop Art, this motif was originally designed to announce Lichtenstein's exhibition at the legendary Leo Castelli Gallery in New York.
The work depicts a scene typical of Lichtenstein, borrowed from the "All-American Men of War" comics: a woman with a beret raised, accompanied by the onomatopoeic explosion "Crak!". The composition in the classic primary colors red, yellow, and blue, as well as the concise contours, define the style of an entire era.
This print is a historical example from 1963–1964. What makes it special is that it was personally hand-signed in pencil by the artist. While unsigned posters from this period are often mere ephemera, the signature elevates this print to the status of a serious collector's item. It is listed in Mary Lee Corlett's official catalogue raisonné under number II.2. A rare opportunity to own a signed piece of New York gallery history.
