With "Theodora," Damien Hirst pays tribute to one of the most fascinating figures in Byzantine history. Like the empress herself, who rose from humble beginnings to become the most powerful woman in the Eastern Roman Empire, this artwork is a study in transformation and splendor. Hirst arranges hundreds of butterfly wings into a pattern strongly reminiscent of religious icons or the magnificent stained-glass windows of ancient cathedrals. It is a kaleidoscope of red and black that creates order from the chaos of nature.

What is often lost in digital images is the physical presence of this work. Hirst uses an aluminum composite panel as a support, which lends the piece a modern, almost industrial coolness that stands in striking contrast to the organic motif. The real highlight, however, is the finishing touch of glitter screen printing. This step refracts the light on the surface, creating a depth that draws the viewer right into the image. The red doesn't just glow; it pulsates.

For Hirst, the butterfly is the ultimate symbol of the soul, but also of the fragility of life. In the "Theodora" edition, he freezes this cycle, creating an object of enduring, almost sacred beauty. As part of the limited HENI edition of 2022, this work represents a fascinating phase in Hirst's late work, in which he perfects classical motifs through new technological processes. The 100 x 100 cm format gives the work the necessary space to make an impact without overwhelming the room. A visually powerful work that perfectly encapsulates both Hirst's obsession with death and his love of aesthetics.
